PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method suitable for treating sludge comprising fibrous components where granulates with a small particle size can be produced at a relatively low energy cost. SOLUTION: At the time when a pasty material is treated, the material is transported through the holes (62) of a perforated board (42) in a granulator in a state where it has a relatively high dry fraction of 40 to 75%. In this case, a feed element (50) forming a wedge-shaped gap space (61) together with the perforated board (42) strokes the perforated board (42) at the trailing edge (53) thereof. The material fibers (63) extruded from the holes (62) are cut by a knife-shaped separating device (64) stroking the discharge-side surface in the perforated board (42). As a result, particles with a particularly small size can be produced from the sludge at a relatively low energy cost without the clogging of the granulator, e.g., by fibers such as hair contained in the sludge.
