System and method for communicating asynchronously with synchronous web services using a mediator service

A system and method for mediating communication between a mobile device and a data source over a network. The system and method comprising: an asynchronous message receiver configured for receiving an asynchronous request message from the device over the network, the asynchronous request message containing a first message field of the asynchronous request message; a synchronous message receiver configured for receiving a synchronous response message from the data source over the network the synchronous response message a result of the asynchronous request message being forwarded to the data source on behalf of the device; and a rules processor for applying a set of rules for combining the first message field of the asynchronous request message with a second message field of the synchronous response message to form an asynchronous response message, the asynchronous response message containing information of the first and second fields to be used by the device for processing the asynchronous response message using application logic resident on the device; wherein the asynchronous response message is subsequently forwarded to the device over the network.
