A round bale transporting trailer (1) comprises a platform (15) for carrying round bales, which is pivotally coupled to a chassis (3) and is tippable relative to the chassis (3) for discharging the bales therefrom. A pick-up mechanism (35) mounted on a forward end (8) of the chassis (3) is provided for picking up and transferring bales from the ground onto the platform (15). The pick-up mechanism comprises a carrier device (38) which is pivotally mounted on the chassis (3) and carries a pair of pick-up arms (36) which in turn carry engagement discs (58), and are pivotal between a gripping state with a bale (2) gripped between the engagement discs (58) and a release state for releasing the bales onto the platform (15). A second ram (49) acting between the chassis (3) and the carrier device (38) urges the carrier device (38) between a pick-up position for picking up a bale on the ground and a loading position for loading the bale onto the platform (15). A third ram (65) mounted within the carrier device (38) operates the pick-up arms (36) between the gripping and release states. A tailgate (18) which is pivotally coupled to the platform (15) is pivotal between a retaining state for retaining the bales on the platform (15) and a discharge state for facilitating discharge of the bales from the platform (15) when the platform (15) is tipped. |
