An automatic automotive gearbox has a lubricant filter comprising a fine filter medium, a coarse filter medium, ultra-fine filter medium and a fluid filter medium. The fluid filter medium has a supplementary ultra-fine filter medium in parallel arrangement with a fine filter and a coarse filter, such that the fluid is sub-divided into three filtered flows. Under normal and high-temperature operating conditions the coarse filter is by-passed by the main flow of fluid and the fine filter is within the main fluid flow. The ultra-fine filter allows the passage of particles less than 5 mu m, and the fine filter allows the passage of particles less than 50 mu m. The fluid filter is a fan-folded panel.
