PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a substrate for a thin-film magnetic head suitably usable for the thin-film magnetic head of a hard disk drive for such high-density recording that makes the spacing between the magnetic disk and a recording and reproducing head into several nm and a thin-film magnetic head. SOLUTION: The substrate 112 for the thin-film magnetic head is composed of a single crystal of MSL<SB>2</SB>. M is one or more metals selected from the group consisting of Mo, Ti, Nb, Cr, W, and Ta.
