The invention relates to a method for the production of a quarternary ammonia compound, wherein an amino compound containing at least one sp³-hybridized nitrogen is reacted at atmospheric pressure with dialkyl sulphate using both alkyl groups of said dialkyl sulphate and the quaternary ammonia compound with sulphate anions thus obtained optionally undergoes anion exchange.
