A recording and reproduction apparatus and method is disclosed by which the copyright of a content can be protected appropriately and the convenience to a user can be enhanced. When a content stored on a first disk is to be copied on a second disk, the apparatus identifies a first, secure content encrypted by a predetermined method and a second, non-secure content from each other. Then, the apparatus copies only the non-secure content into an auxiliary memory and stores IDs of the second content and the first disk in a coordinated relationship. If a user unloads the first disk from the apparatus and loads the new second disk, then the apparatus decides whether or not the new disk is different from the first disk. If the new disk is different, then the content is copied from the auxiliary memory on the second disk.
