In a cellular communication system (100), a first communication unit (101) comprises an association memory (115) storing dynamic associations between user identifiers and communication unit identifiers. A user interface (111) may receive a target user identifier. The user interface (111) is coupled to an association controller (113) which determines a target communication unit identifier as a communication unit identifier associated with a user identifier matching the target user identifier. A transmission controller (117) then initiates communication to a second communication unit (109) using the target communication unit identifier. The invention facilitates the use of user identifier addressing in a communication system based on communication unit identifier addressing. The association memory (115) is updated by the first communication unit (101) receiving association messages comprising association information from other communication units. The association messages may be transmitted and generated in response to association request messages transmitted from the first communication unit (101).
