PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a source driver for a planar display apparatus and an image data compression transmission method in the source driver which reduce the workload of designing and the fabrication cost by decreasing the number of data input and output lines inside the source driver. SOLUTION: The source driver includes: an input block (100) for generating an image data sequence having pixel data transmitted through N numbers of channels (N is a natural number) as a unit; a multiplexing block (200) for compressing the image data sequence to output through a data bus having a data width corresponding to N/L numbers of channels (wherein L and N/L are natural numbers); a line latch circuit (400) constituted M numbers of latches (wherein M is a natural number larger than N) receiving the pixel data in the image data sequence inputted when a corresponding latch enable signal is inputted; and a shift register (300) for controlling the timing of a latch enable signal to the latch.
