PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound useful as an intermediate for the synthesis of medicines, e.g. retinol. SOLUTION: This derivative is a compound of formula I [Ar is a (substituted) aryl; R1 and R2 are each a protective group for H or OH], for example, 1,5- diacetoxy-3,7-dimethyl-9-(2,6,6-trimethylcyclohexen-1-yl)-9-(4-methylp henylsulfonyl)- nona-2,6-diene. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a sulfone of formula II (e.g. β-cyclogeranyl-p-tolylsulfone) with a halohydrin derivative of formula III (X is a halogen; R3 and R4 are each a protective group for OH) (e.g. 8-bromo-3,7-dimethyl-octa-2,6-diene-1,5-diacetate) in the presence of a base such as n-butyllithium normally in an organic solvent such as tetrahydrofuran at -78 deg.C to the boiling point of the solvent normally for about 1-24 h, and if necessary, deprotecting the resultant product. |
