PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for improving heat stability of 5-ethyl-2-(1,1-dimethyl-2-hydroxyethyl)-5-hydroxymethyl-1,3-dioxane. SOLUTION: The method for producing 5-ethyl-2-(1,1-dimethyl-2-hydroxethyl)-5-hydroxymethyl-1,3-dioxane comprises reacting hydroxypivalaldehyde with trimethylol propane in the presence of an acid catalyst and a solvent. In the production method, a crystal of 5-ethyl-2-(1,1-dimethyl-2-hydroxyethyl)-5-hydroxymethyl-1,3-dioxane is separated from the reaction product and then the crystal is washed with a basic solution.
