PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a near infrared ray absorbing glass having an excellent high transmissivity in the visible ray region, an excellent absorbing characteristic in the near infrared ray region and an excellent weatherability and suitable for a near infrared ray absorbing element such as near infrared ray absorbing filter and to provide the near infrared ray absorbing element. SOLUTION: The near infrared ray absorbing glass contains 25-45% P<SP>5+</SP>, 1-10% Al<SP>3+</SP>, 15-30% Li<SP>+</SP>, 0.1-10% Mg<SP>2+</SP>, 0.1-20% Ca<SP>2+</SP>, 0.1-20% Sr<SP>2+</SP>, 0.1-20% Ba<SP>2+</SP>and 1-8% Cu<SP>2+</SP>by cation% and also contains 25-50 anion% F<SP>-</SP>and O<SP>2-</SP>as the anion component and the near infrared ray absorbing element is provided with the near infrared ray absorbing glass.
