PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for processing an optical fiber suitable for an optical communication module, by which a step corresponding to the boundary between a core end part and a clad end part on an incident end face is precisely formed regardless the tilt of the incident end face with respect to an optical axis. SOLUTION: The method for processing the optical fiber having a first end face and a second end face includes: an applying process in which a photosensitizing agent is applied on a predetermined area including at least the whole area of a core end part on the first end face with a nearly uniform thickness; an exposure process in which only a photosetting material applied on the core on the first end face is exposed by radiating the photosetting material with light having a predetermined wavelength through the optical fiber from the second end face side in a state that the first end face is immersed in a predetermined solution having a refractive index nearly same as that of the photosensitizing agent; and a step formation process in which a step is formed at the boundary between the core end part and a clad end part on the first end face via a developing process in which at least the first end face pulled up from a solution is developed.
