PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rack shaft having a high degree of freedom in design, and to provide its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The rack shaft 1 comprises a rod 2 and a rack 3 composed of a rack toothed portion 4 meshing with a pinion shaft, a protruded portion 5 protruded on the back face of the rack toothed portion 4 and having recesses in both radial sides, and a rack part joint portion 6 provided on the joint side end face of the rod 2 and having an outer diameter larger than the joint side end face 2a of the rod 2 for friction pressure contact with the joint side end face 2a of the rod 2.
