A lean NO<SUB>x </SUB>trap composition. The lean NO<SUB>x </SUB>trap composition utilizes ruthenium in place of higher cost metals such as platinum. The lean NO<SUB>x </SUB>trap composition provides high NO<SUB>x </SUB>storage efficiency and high NO<SUB>x </SUB>conversion efficiency when incorporated in a lean NO<SUB>x </SUB>trap. A method of removing harmful gases using the lean NO<SUB>x </SUB>trap composition is also described.
