A key input method in a portable terminal and a device thereof are provided to offer a key having plural input values such as a number/character input value and an input value necessary for control of the portable terminal, thereby reducing the number of keys of a key input unit. A key input unit(27) is divided into plural areas, and includes plural keys having input values corresponding to each area. When a conversion key included in the key input unit(27) is inputted, a controller(10) sets an input value, corresponding to one of the plural areas divided to each of the keys, to a basic input value of the corresponding key. When the corresponding key is inputted, the controller(10) controls operation corresponding to the basic input value set for the corresponding key to be performed.
