Cooling element consisting of high heat conductivity material such as Cu or steel for a shaft furnace, especially a blast furnace including an oven wall in fire resistant material for continuous smelting of iron girders in molten pig iron. The blast furnace is surrounded by a metal cover which in high thermal load regions is protected against overheating by a water-cooled plate type cooling element.
