PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus capable of suppressing occurrence of white jump and noise while carrying out correction processing utilizing histogram equalization.

SOLUTION: An SPU 3 carries out signal processing such as white balance adjustment and thereafter an RPU 4 carries out basic image processing such as interpolation processing. Further, the RPU 4 divides image data into a plurality of block regions, applies histogram equalization processing to each block region at a different gain and applies noise reduction processing in response to the gain to each block region. Then a compression conversion section 7 applies compression conversion of a prescribed form to the image data at a proper stage so as to obtain excellent image wherein the dark parts are corrected bright while suppressing production of white jump and noise.
