<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control cruising according to the traffic, at lanes adjacent to a lane on which own vehicle is traveling, in a way that would not make the driver feel discomfort. <P>SOLUTION: During follow-up cruise control by which own vehicle is driven following a vehicle running ahead of it, the states of congestion on the lanes adjacent to the lane on which own vehicle travels are detected.
