<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller capable of securing the traveling performance of a vehicle when either of two transmission mechanisms is brought into a troubled state disabling normal operation in a drive device for a vehicle transmitting the output of a drive force source to drive wheels through the two transmission mechanisms. <P>SOLUTION: In this transmission mechanisms 10 having a continuously variable transmission part 11 and a stepped transmission part 20, if either of the continuously variable transmission 11 and the stepped transmission part 20 is brought into a troubled state, the total reduction gear ratio of one of the transmission parts is changed by a fail transmission part control means 84 so that the total reduction gear ratio γT of the transmission mechanism 10 formed based on the reduction gear ratio γT of the continuously variable transmission 11 and the reduction gear ratio γT of the stepped transmission part 20 becomes a total reduction gear ratio γT immediately before the other transmission part is brought into the troubled state.
