A plastics crate holds a consignment of e.g. books, mail order products or letters. The crate passes through a series of mainly automated mechanical handling stages en route to its destination. The crate has a base section (3) and a push-fit cover (2) which has internal locks preventing unwanted release. Access to the internal locks is via a sliding hatch (25) in the cover, which is held closed by a spring.
