The invention provides a process for preparing optically active 1,2-haloalcohols from an a-haloketone by asymmetric catalytic hydrogenation of a-haloketones comprising providing a substrate comprising an a-haloketone and contacting the substrate with a hydrogenation reagent under conditions effective for hydrogenation of the substrate in the presence of a catalyst comprising ruthenium or rhodium coordinated to a bisphosphine ligand.
