PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a protein considered to be a salt tolerance-enhancing transfer factor having an activity for improving environmental stress such as salt, moisture or thermal stress, especially salt stress tolerance and to provide a gene encoding the protein, a transgenic plant, etc., having the enhanced environmental stress tolerance.
SOLUTION: A halophilous plant Suaeda japonica having a strong activity for improving the salt stress tolerance and growable even in an arid land where salts are accumulated is used to carry out a search for a gene related to the salt tolerance of the Suaeda japonica by a method for functional screening using a genetic expression system of Escherichia coli aiming at isolation of a gene cluster (cDNA) related to the mechanism of the salt tolerance of the Suaeda japonica. Thereby, it is found that the protein considered as the salt tolerance-enhancing transfer factor composed of 670 amino acids or the protein containing a region PSTTK (proline-serine-threonine-threonine-lysine)-repeat where the PSTTK are repeated total 17 times in the amino acid sequence and an amino acid sequence similar thereof has functions to enhance the salt tolerance, sorbitol tolerance (moisture stress tolerance) and thermostability of the Escherichia coli.
COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
