PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller of an automatic transmission capable suppressing of a shock and bringing a frictional engagement element (clutch for advancement) into an engaged state even if the position of a shift lever is not correctly detected. SOLUTION: An ECU implements a program comprising a step (S106) for starting the measurement of an elapsed time from a non-contact state when the shift lever is operated from an "N" position to a "D" position and the shift lever is shifted into a non-contact state that the shift lever is not positioned in both the "D" position and the "N" position (YES in S104) and a step (S112) for lowering instruction pressure to non-contact hydraulic pressure P (3) lower than the hydraulic pressure P (2) at low temperatures when a forward clutch is disengaged (YES in S108) in a non-contact state and the elapsed time from the non-contact state comes within a pre-determined time T (0) (YES in S110).
