PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a structure for suppressing decrease of illuminance on a screen which is considered to be a cause of wear in anode at an early stage of the life span, in a high-pressure discharge lamp lighting apparatus of direct current lighting type actively utilizing a cathode bright point. SOLUTION: A high-pressure discharge lamp lighting apparatus has a high-pressure discharge lamp 1, in which mercury of 0.16 mg/mm<SP>3</SP>or higher, rare gas, and halogen of the range of 1×10<SP>-6</SP>to 1×10<SP>-2</SP>μmol/mm<SP>3</SP>are filled into an arc tube 10, and a power supply apparatus Ex for supplying direct current to the discharge lamp to light it.
