PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure adequate transfer performance even at a higher processing speed by improving primary transfer performance from a first color in an image forming apparatus for forming an image in a plurality of colors. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: an image carrier 1 on which a toner image is formed and carried; an intermediate transfer body 2 disposed opposite the image carrier 1 and adapted to temporarily hold the toner image on the image carrier 1; a primary transfer means 3 for transferring the toner image on the image carrier 1 to the surface of the intermediate transfer body 2; and a secondary transfer means 5 for secondarily transferring the transfer toner image on the intermediate transfer body 2 to the surface of a recording material 4. The image forming apparatus is provided with a charge application means 6 with which, before the transfer of the toner image in the first color is started by the primary transfer means 3, electrostatic charges having a polarity opposite to that of the toner is applied to the intermediate transfer body 2 so that the rate at which the first color is transferred is equal to or higher than the target rates at which from a second color onwards are transferred.
