A laser (6) process for forming a hole, especially an air cooling hole in a layered workpiece, especially a turbine component, comprises removing the layer in the region of the hole and then boring into the base material beneath the layer. Preferably the cover layer is for temperature protection. An independent claim is also included for a layered workpiece especially a turbine component as above.
