PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique by which ammonia is synthesized from hydrogen and nitrogen under the conditions of low temperature/low pressure without using a hydrogen storage means such as a hydrogen tank.
SOLUTION: In a state were an electrolytic substance 111 is present between a cathode 101 composed of a metallic material having hydrogen absorption/penetration action and having low overvoltage to the generation of hydrogen such as palladium and an anode 103, electric current is made to flow between both the electrodes, and electrolysis is performed. A catalyst material 102 is carried on the outside of the cathode 101, and gaseous nitrogen is fed to the surface thereof. Hydrogen generated by the electrolysis penetrates the cathode 101, and is fed to the catalyst material 102 in the state of atomic hydrogen. Whereas, in the catalyst material 102, the gaseous nitrogen is dissociated and adsorbed to produce atomic nitrogen, and the atomic nitrogen and the atomic hydrogen fed from the cathode 101 are reacted to synthesize ammonia.
COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
