<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device with high operability capable of picking up an image of high quality in accordance with a user's intention without missing image pickup opportunities. <P>SOLUTION: When a shutter release button is half-depressed (timing T11), automatic adjustment processing for deciding optimal image pickup conditions automatically to be set at the time of picking up an image is started. Also, like a pattern 1, when a half-depressed state is continued afterward and the shutter release button is pressed down with timing T14 after more appropriate image pickup conditions are decided by the automatic adjustment processing, a picked up image which has adapted the image pickup conditions decided to be optimal by the automatic adjustment processing is captured and recorded.
