PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for obtaining an aromatic dihydroxy compound which is of a high purity and useful as a raw material for use in the manufacture of a polycarbonate by treating at a low cost, in a very short time for the decomposition and in large quantities a waste aromatic polycarbonate (aromatic polycarbonate products, for example, unwanted CD, CD-ROM, DVD and the like). SOLUTION: The method for obtaining an aromatic dihydroxy compound from a waste polycarbonate by the decomposition of an ester interchange between a waste aromatic polycarbonate and a 1-4C alcohol, is characterized by using as a solvent a halogenated hydrocarbon compound, as a decomposing catalyst a metal hydroxide and as a decomposition reaction temperature a temperature of 90-150°C.
