PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detailedly measure a characteristic of a specimen, in a measuring instrument for specimen characteristics, using coloration test paper with a color tone of coloration changed by the difference in the characteristics of the specimens. SOLUTION: A reflection type photosensor 10 includes a light emitting element 20 having a wide wavelength range of light emission characteristics, and two light-receiving elements 50a, 50b having light-receiving characteristics different each other by the detection wavelength bands. A storage part 132 of a control IC 120 stores a standard table as to time variation of the reflectance for each of the characteristics of the specimen, in each of the detection wavelength bands. When the specimen is put on a test piece 102 of the coloration test paper 100 to color-develop the test piece 102, the test piece 102 is irradiated with a light from the light-emitting element 20, the reflectance of a returned light is detected by the two light-receiving elements 50a, 50b, and the time variation of the reflectance is calculated for each of the detection wavelength bands.
