PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for producing carbon nanotubes, and more particularly to provide a method and an apparatus for more efficiently mass-producing carbon nanotubes by a chemical vapor deposition using a catalyst. SOLUTION: The gas-solid contact of a carbon-containing gas and a solid catalyst layer is satisfactorily maintained by mixing alumina balls or the like into the solid catalyst layer as a diluent. Further, the solid catalyst is carried in the flowing direction of the carbon-containing gas by stirring a diluent layer.
