PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a vehicle for reducing exhaust emissions. SOLUTION: The vehicle includes an engine, a motor, a battery, and a catalyst reducing exhaust emissions. When at least first condition is satisfied, the vehicle is operated in a first mode. The first mode includes supply of at least part of required vehicle output power. When the power output from the battery is within a first predetermined range, the engine is operated to quickly increasing a temperature of the catalyst. When the output power of the battery is out of the predetermined range, the operation of the engine is controlled so as to make battery operation fall within the first predetermined range. When at least one predetermined condition is not satisfied, the vehicle is operated in a second mode which is at least partially based on driver request and battery requirement.
