PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for determining a rotation direction of an internal combustion engine capable of easily determining the rotation direction of the internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: Rotation speed of the internal combustion engine is detected by generation interval of pulses output by a signal generation device 2. The signal generation device 2 detects a front end side edge of reluctor and time from generation of a first pulse to detection of a rear end side edge of the reluctor and generation of a second pulse is measured as reluctor passing time of each cylinder. If an inequality of Tnew≥αTold (αis a constant.) between a newly measured reluctor passing time Tnew of each cylinder and previously measured reluctor passing time Told of each cylinder is not satisfied, it is determined that the internal combustion engine rotates in a regular direction. If Tnew≥αTold is satisfied and it is detected that rotation speed is a predetermined value or less, it is determined that the internal combustion engine rotates in a reverse direction.
