PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new copolymer useful as a raw material for formulation in a cosmetic and to provide the cosmetic comprising the same formulated therein. SOLUTION: The copolymer is characterized as follows. Hydroxyethyl acrylamide is copolymerized with an unsaturated monomer represented by structural formula (I) (wherein, R<SP>1</SP>denotes a hydrogen atom or a methyl group; R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>and R<SP>4</SP>denote each independently a hydrogen atom or a 1-4C straight-chain alkyl group; and X denotes an NH or absent) and/or structural formula (II) (wherein, R1 denotes a hydrogen atom or a methyl group; R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP>and R<SP>5</SP>denote each independently a hydrogen atom or a 1-4C straight-chain alkyl group; and Y denotes a conjugate base of an acid, a halogen atom or a 1-4C alkylsulfate group).
