<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which satisfies the appropriate transfer efficiency required to transfer the toner images carried on the intermediate transfer member to the recording medium and has adequate peeling capability to peel the recording medium from the intermediate transfer member. <P>SOLUTION: The primary transfer transfers the toner images carried on the photo conductors 21a-21d and stacks them on an intermediate transfer member 31. The recording paper P and the intermediate transfer member 31 are pinched between a secondary transfer roller 36 which is in contact with the intermediate transfer member 31 and a secondary transfer roller 32 facing the roller 36 to make the secondary transfer of the images carried on the transfer member 31 to the recording paper P. The peeling unit 53 applies an electrical field to the recording paper P.
