PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an information retrieval system indexing, retrieving, organizing and explaining a document by use of a phrase. SOLUTION: The phrase is identified such that presence of another phrase inside the document is predicted. The document is indexed by the phrase included therein. A related phrase and an expansion phrase are also identified. The phrase inside a query is identified, and the document is retrieved by use of the phrase, and is ranked. The document of a retrieval result is clustered by use of the phrase, the explanation of the document is produced, and a copied document is deleted from the retrieval result and the index.
