PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform magnetic recording and reproduction in high density with high reliability without erasing information on the adjacent tracks of a discrete track medium. SOLUTION: In a discrete track type vertical two-layer film medium, the surface of a magnetic recording layer side of soft magnetic base layer and the surface of a non-magnetic substrate side of the soft magnetic base layer are not parallel to each other, or their surface roughness is different.
