PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat-resistant optical fiber extremely excellent in heat resistance which can be used in a high temperature environment such as in base rock near volcanic magma. SOLUTION: A solution of a silica microporous material synthesized by a sol-gel method from a mixture liquid of silicon alkoxide, active alcohol which promotes hydrolysis, alcohol and water is applied onto the outer surface of a quartz or glass optical fiber (1) composed of a core (1a) and a clad (1d) and is baked to form a silica microporous film (2) essentially made up of silicon.
