The invention provides a method for increasing apolipoprotein E (ApoE) in plasma and in tissues of a mammal by using a combination of an ApoE increasing amount of an activator of the orphan nuclear receptor FXR and an ApoE increasing amount of an activator of the orphan nuclear receptor LXRalpha. Also provided is the use of a combination of an ApoE increasing amount of a FXR activator and of an ApoE increasing amount of a LXRalpha activator, for the manufacture of a medicament for increasing ApoE in plasma and in tissues of a mammal.
