The internal combustion engine has one cylinder (4) divided into two combustion chambers by a double acting piston. The piston faces (8,9) are rounded on their circumference so that in the respective reversal point of the piston in the corner region between the cylinder end wall, cylinder jacket and piston face an encompassing ignition chamber (21") is formed into which fuel injection nozzles (12,13) and air feed openings (14) open out. The fuel injection direction of the nozzle extends outwards at an angle to the axis of the piston.
