PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To immediately acquire an image in a preferable exposure state in switching between preview photographing for adding and synthesizing pixels and still image photographing for not adding and synthesizing pixels, in an image pickup device. SOLUTION: In switching a mode from the preview for adding and synthesizing four pixels in each vertical two pixels to generate a compressed image to the still image photographing, an H counter 40 doubles a horizontal scanning period H in accordance with the number of information electric charges to be horizontally transferred. An automatic exposure control circuit 26 defines an exposure control value using H as a unit. In preview, a reference exposure control value Io outputted by the circuit 26 is set in a V counter 42 without any change, and in still image photographing, an exposure control value I obtained by doubling the Io is set in accordance with the number of synthesized pixels in a vertical direction in a multiplier 58. In switching the mode, the length of H and the exposure control value I are each doubled, thereby quadrupling an exposure time E according to the number of synthesized pixels.
