PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a washing machine allowing easy setting of a water level relatively higher than a water level automatically set. SOLUTION: The washing machine includes: an agitator vane 2 rotatably provided at the inner bottom of a washing and spin-drying tub 3 rotatably provided in an outer tub 1; a motor 6 for driving the washing and spin-drying tub 3 and the agitator vane 2; a cloth amount sensing means 15 for detecting the amount of laundry in the washing and spin-drying tub 3; and a control means 25 for controlling the motor 6 or the like for washing, and controlling rinsing and spin-drying processes. In the washing machine, a water level in the process is allowed to be set by selecting either one of a normal volume of water automatically set according to the cloth amount detected by the cloth amount sensing means 15, or a volume of water larger than the normal volume of water. When a user needs to slightly increase the amount of water automatically set according to the cloth amount detected by the cloth amount sensing means 15 in the process, the amount of water is allowed to be readily selected and set, which saves labor, improves operability, and achieves washing and rinsing performances suiting user's taste.
