AUTOMOTIVE BOLSTER

This invention relates to inflatable automotive bolsters some times referred to as active bolsters. On initiation a gas is expelled into the bolster and the bolster expands. Desirably the bolster moves toward the vehicle occupant so as to minimize the distance between the occupant and the bolster, and then provides greater space for energy absorption. The bolster is fixed in place by tethers one of which is extensive. The tethers then permit movement of the bolster upon expansion in a desirable direction. In the example of a knee bolster the surface of the bolster intended to be impacted by the vehicle occupant may move upwardly and rearwardly toward the occupant from its preactivation instrument panel location.
