The device has a control unit that receives a switching warning signal from a steering unit before gear change, and outputs a speed control signal to steering unit in response to a modified acceleration request if the switching warning signal is received. The device monitors the ideal velocity of a motor vehicle and performs speed control to reduce measured actual speed of the vehicle. An independent claim is also included for the automatic speed control method.
