A display device includes a base (402, 502, 602, 702) and light valve components formed over the base (402, 502, 602, 702). The base (402, 502, 602, 702) includes electrical circuitry. Each of the light valve components includes a chamber (406, 506, 606, 706) that defines an optical path, particles (408, 508, 608, 708) within the chamber (406, 506, 606, 706), and a mechanism for transversely repositioning the particles (408, 508, 608, 708) in relation to the optical path in response to voltages provided by the electrical circuitry.
