The invention provides a floor tool (100) for a cleaning appliance (10) comprising a head (102) for engaging with a floor surface, a connecting arm (106) pivotally connected to the head (102) about a first axis (A-A) and a supporting body (104) pivotally connected to the head (102) about a second axis (B-B). The head (102) includes a suction opening (114) which lies in a suction plane (S). The connecting arm (106) includes an outlet (124) in communication with the suction opening (114) and adapted to connect to the cleaning appliance (10). The connecting arm (106) is adapted and arranged to engage with the supporting body (104) so that when, in use, the floor tool (100) is pushed forwardly across the floor surface, the connecting arm (106) applies a force to the head (102) in a direction away from the floor surface. This allows the floor tool (100) to be of reduced depth than was achievable hitherto whilst still being able to achieve the desired ''rocking'' motion to improve cleaning performance.
