A process for metallizing a ceramic oxide such as Al2O3 comprises melting on the surface thereof, in an atmosphere of H2, Zr and either V or Mo or a mixture thereof, together with Ni as a solvent metal therefor, the atomic ratio of Zr to Ni greater than 1 to 3, and the total of V and/or Mo being at least 0.001% by weight of the metallic composition. In Example I a bead of Ni of cuplike shape was placed on the surface of a piece of Al2O3 and Zr and Mo were placed in the Ni cup. The whole was heated in a vacuum to 600 DEG C. to degas the materials. H2 was then admitted and heating continued up to 1500 DEG C. when the metal mass melted and spread over the Al2O3 surface. Example II was similar but the Mo was replaced by V. Heating was to 800 DEG C. for degassing and to 1400 DEG C. for melting. Applications for metallizing ceramics are in making electronic valves, cutting tools and cermets.
