System has remote control unit (18) with transponder which, on reception of interrogation signal, transmits identification code group. Control unit (12), in vehicle (10), transmits interrogation signal on actuation of starter button (26) in vehicle. Control unit checks identification code group transmitted by remote control unit and enables starting procedure of engine only when identification code group coincides with code group expected by it. A signal detector connected to the reception aerial has a reaction threshold which can be toggled between a high and a low value. The interrogation signal is only relayed for further evaluation when its level exceeds the set reaction threshold. |
