PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection display device equipped with a projection optical system having simple constitution by restraining deterioration in the image-formation performance of the projection optical system without causing large chromatic aberration and the curvature of image surface even when a field lens is arranged near a reflection type display element. SOLUTION: The projection display device is designed in such a way that luminous flux emitted from a rod integrator 3 illuminates the surface of a picture display element 8 by relay lenses 5-1, 5-2 and 5-3 and the field lenses 7-1 and 7-2 constituted of two or more lenses, and simultaneously the emitting surface of the rod 3 forms an image on the surface of the picture display element 8. The light reflected and emitted by the picture display element 8 is made incident on the field lenses 7-1 and 7-2 again, and projected to a screen or the like by a projection lens 9 or the like. The projection lens is constituted of a lens group 9-1 on a side nearer to the picture display element 8 and having positive power as a whole, and a lens group 9-2 on a side nearer to the screen and having negative power as a whole.
